Senegal is one of the strongest national teams on the African continent. The “Lions de la Téranga” have qualified for the World Cup three times and even made it to the quarter-finals in 2002 - including a sensational 1-0 victory against the then defending champions France!

However, the Senegalese have been less successful on African soil. Even though they regularly make it to the knockout stage, they had to wait until 2021 to win the tournament for the first time.

Senegal also came very close to triumphing in 2019. In a hotly contested final, they narrowly lost 1-0 to Algeria. This jersey is also from that tournament:

Worn by Salif Sané during Senegal's 1-0 victory over Benin in the quarter-final. There he also swapped a Benin goalkeeper jersey, which has also made it into my collection.

The player version of the Puma jersey has some major differences to the fan version. Firstly, the fabric is much thinner, and secondly, any applications are ironed onto the jersey and not embroidered. The tribal lion on the chest is also not dyed into the fabric but consists of a thin layer of plastic.

How did several of Salif Sané's jerseys make it into my collection? Well, when Sané, who played for Schalke for several years, had to move house, his wife mercilessly sorted out his jerseys and gave them to an employee of the removal company, from whom I eventually got the shirts.
