THE TEAM
Probably no other football nation has been the subject of such controversy in recent years as Qatar.
From the dubious practice of naturalizing foreign players and using them to form the backbone of the national team, to the controversial awarding of the 2022 World Cup to the desert state and the serious human rights violations associated with it.
After all, the Qatari national team relied increasingly on local players in the years leading up to the tournament and sensationally won the Asia Cup in 2019.
However, the 2022 home World Cup ended in a footballing debacle. The team lost all of its matches and is the weakest host of a World Cup to date.
THE SHIRT
All controversy aside, there's no denying that Qatar have had some terrific kits over the years - especially in the 90s.
A good example is this lovely piece from 1997 by Thai manufacturer Grand Sports.
Apart from Latvia and Georgia (in the 90s), Qatar is the only team to take the field in maroon.
The away jersey is traditionally kept in white and features a triangular pattern in the upper quarter of the design. To make sure everyone knows who made this jersey, Grand Sport has integrated its name into the pattern a dozen times.
Unlike other Qatar jerseys, federation badge is only printed on the jersey and not embroidered. It was worn by Jassim Al-Tamimi – at least the dirt stains bear witness to this. I couldn't find out exactly when it was worn, as I couldn't find any pictures of the national team with long sleeves, but it's probably from a match in autumn or winter.
