THE COUNTRY
Latvia's football form curve has shown a clear downward trend in recent years. After success in the early 2000s, the team slipped from a respectable 45th place in the FIFA rankings to 148th. This was compounded by a drop into the UEFA Nations League D, where they were among the three worst teams in Europe during their first year. At least this year's Nations League was a bit more successful for the Latvians: against “heavyweights” like Moldova, Andorra, and Liechtenstein, they were able to win in a largely commanding fashion and, tied on points with Moldova, qualified for promotion to Group C on the basis of a better goal difference.
THE SHIRT
Latvia's latest away jersey is based on the new Adidas templates, which are strongly inspired by the “Teamgeist” kits of the 2006 World Cup. For the first time, a Latvian away shirt is completely monochrome and has no maroon or red features.
Nevertheless, the shirt has many small details that make it quite interesting. Between the embroidered Adidas and federation crest is a howling wolf – a reference to the national team's nickname “11 Vilki” (11 Wolves) – which has been punched into the fabric. Underneath you will find the match details of the game in which this shirt was worn:
Latvia's narrow 1-0 win over the Faroe Islands on September 10, 2024.
The shirt was worn by captain Kristers Tobers, who plays for Grasshopper Club Zürich.
