THE COUNTRY

"Los Ticos", as the national team of Costa Rica and also its inhabitants are called, has always been the most successful national team in Central America. With six appearances in World Cups and three won CONCACAF/Gold Cup championships, Costa Rica is one of the continent's most successful teams, with the small country's biggest international success likely being reaching the quarterfinals of the 2014 World Cup in Brazil.

THE SHIRT

In preparation for the 2006 World Cup in Germany, Costa Rica played a series of test matches. The results of these matches, however, did not raise great expectations for the tournament: of the six matches, only one was won and four lost. One of these defeats was a 4-0 against Ukraine, who also participated in the World Cup. This match was also the only one in which the Costa Ricans' alternate jersey was worn.

Also kept in the same "brushstroke" design, like the home and away jerseys, the third shirt features thick blue vertical stripes with a white box in the middle, which was actually intended for the front numbers. The fact that this jersey was worn "only" in a test match apparently didn't motivate the kitman enough to actually put some front numbers on it....

The shirt was used by defender Leonardo González, who was substituted in the second half. As a fan of alternate jerseys and "one-off" shirts, I am very happy to add this rare piece to my collection
