In contrast to the Baltic states, which played their first international matches in the 1920s, the history of the Belarusian national team only began in 1992 after the collapse of the Soviet Union with a friendly match against Lithuania.
The team did not play many games in the first few years. In 1995, they faced their first really big opponent, the Netherlands. The team around the big superstars such as Edgar David, Patrick Kluivert and Clarence Seedorf had probably imagined a much easier evening on June 7, 1995. In front of almost 30,000 spectators, the Belarusians took the lead in the 27th minute and managed to hold on to the result for 90 minutes. The second and certainly the biggest victory in Belarus' short footballing history to date.
They also left the pitch as winners in style: While Belarus usually took to the pitch in red or white jerseys, the third green jersey was worn against the Oranjes, which is probably the most beautiful Belarus jersey of all time.
A dazzling pattern of squares is woven into the beautiful green fabric while there are more geometric patterns and white and red on the chest and sleeves. Typical for the 90s, the shirt has a chic collar with a press stud. No wonder that the Dutch captain Danny Blind also wanted such a beautiful jersey if he couldn't take any points home with him. So the jersey eventually moved from his private collection to Classicfootballshirts and from there to a collector who sold it to me.
And so the shirt joins the white home jersey that I already have in my collection.
